Elder Corbridge Did Nothing Wrong! WWJD?

Elder Corbridge spoke directly and correctly Who is the Jesus of the Gospels? WWJD?

 Raw Transcript:

All right, let's take a little walk.
Want to talk a little bit about Elder Corbage and the response that has been given to his very direct talks. That
viral short that went around, it's something we're not very used to hearing and so we're oversensitized to direct
talk. And that's a problem with these things is that they start to spiral away from you. The more you are microaggressed
because you are not hearing direct talk, the more reaction you're going to have.
And so people don't do it. And then you become even more microaggressed when you hear someone give direct talk like this.
So I I was very surprised by some people within the church and some that spoke
against what he was saying. Uh his attitude, his approach, I I think it's spot-on. I think it's fantastic. I think it's needed desperately.
1 minuteAnd I want to go over this a little bit.
We are we are we are so coddled. I I mean that we are so coddled in so many ways that that
when we hear smooth things, we love it, right? But when we hear direct things,
we want to rebel. We want to push back on it. And so I want to cover that a little bit. This episode is brought to you by Go and Do Travel and the Wave
Makers podcaster cruise. This is coming November 14th through 21st.
Fantastic time. Cardon Ellis, Jacob Hansen. Hayden and Jackson Paul, Andrea Woodmancy, Hannah Stoddard, Aranai.
Uh, just I'm missing so many, but such a fun time. It's such a good, fun, edifying,
great time to go spend a week with these individuals, hear them speak, and just talk to them one- on- one. We're going
up the California coast November 14th through 21st. Uh would love to see you there. To find out more, go to quickmedia.com up to the top to trips
and events and scroll down to Wavemakers podcaster cruise.
All right, so let's go over this a little bit. Got a trash truck here backing up for an eternity.
But just want to cover something on this. I I went to a couple of
comment sections on people that covered Elder Corb and
it's just so disme I I don't get it. I don't understand how
we have moved so far to a place where, you know, this is going to break us or we want to push back because it's not
coddling us. And that's not the way the gospel works.
Gospel cuts like a sword. The truth cuts like a sword. Jesus cut like a sword.
Yes, Jesus. I'm going to go over that in a minute. Jesus is not who we make him out to be sometimes. And we need to stop it.
But this whole idea about truth trumps your comfort. That's what Elder Corb says. Corb says truth co truth truth
trumps your comfort. And that is true.
And to say otherwise, to say that your comfort is above the truth is really it's concerning.
Your culture in the church needs to change sometimes and it should and we should all participate in improving that.
But leaving because of the culture does bring you
back to the primary questions that he's talking about and that is was Joseph Smith a prophet was he or wasn't he? Did
he have the first vision? Did he translate the Book of Mormon with the gift and power of God? Was the priesthood restored through John the
Baptist and Peter, James, and John? Did all those things happen or didn't they? And that's where you have to go back to.
And all that he is saying in a direct way is if you do believe those things
and you stay focused on those things then you will stay. He's not a command.
He's trying to people are trying to say it's like a command like you will stay.
It it's it's preposterous that we put it into that position of some abusive father.
I that that is where our culture has moved to. I I suppose
that direct talk is an abusive father and that God therefore is some type of abusive father.
5 minutesIt's not how it works.
You will stay. He talks about even if you're have a culture of alcatra. He's using an extreme obviously no one has a
culture of al alcatra. You will stay if your bishop is Darth Vader. No one has Darth Vader as their bishop. You might get a bad bishop. It's true. It's
possible. Uh makes bad decisions, is authoritarian. It's it's very possible.
But that doesn't change the truth.
That does not change the truth. And some people talk about abuse and other, you know, horrible things that can happen
even within the church. And that's tragic. It's horrible. It's horrible. It's horrible. It's horrible.
It doesn't change the truth. Bad things happen to good people.
And yes, God allows it. God does permit bad things to happen to good people. It happens all the time. We just saw Chuck,
6 minutesyou know, in in his accident that was allowed for whatever reason. We don't know. But
God is not always who we think he is. is some guy that we just run to for comfort and that's all we have in Jesus is a is
a big comfort blanket, a teddy bear that we can cuddle up to all the time.
It it's there's so much more beyond that. But that's unfortunately sometimes the relationship that we decide to
build. Here's a comment that uh that someone had made on one of the social
media posts that were out there in quotation marks. You will stay. And they're going to treat it as a command.
Of course, even if it is a prison camp run by ruthless evil overlords.
Come on. You know, just because it's God's kingdom. No, I won't. This person says, "No, I won't." Okay.
Make your choice. Go do what you like. Again, that is not what is being said. And you're you're acting like I'm sorry.
It's kind of like a rebellious teenager.
It is this is not a uh this is not a this has nothing to do with the truth.
It has nothing to do with the truth. The truth claims are there. If you don't believe the truth claims, hey, that's completely different.
I think that what Elder Corbid is saying is go back to those and ask if those things are true or not. Even if you have
a bad culture, even if something bad happens.
Uh I've had bad things happen. I've had to try and make them right. I've had to fight for certain things.
And that's unfortunate, right? It's it's unfortunate. like I've had to really fight.
But that has nothing to do with whether the church is true.
It has nothing to do with whether the gospel is restored, etc. Here's another one.
Corb's line that the real question isn't do I fit in, but is the church true? And and and then there's massive push back on that. Well, and you might not fit in.
It still doesn't change if it's true.
That does not change the fact that it is true for me, right? It would not change the fact that it is true.
So, it's not I I I don't see in any way that this is dismissing people and it's
dismissing uh pain or it is dismissing uncomfortable situations or a bad situation. I don't think it does it all.
It's simply saying if you are having a bad time with something, go back to the question, is the church true? Ask yourself that.
That that is that's a simple simple direct piece of advice I think that he's giving.
It's not if you fit in. Does that need to change if you don't? It does. People need to change and they need to be more
loving and more accepting in not intolerating sin.
It's not tolerating sin. Jesus never tolerated sin but more accepting of others.
And they might not always be just like you.
The a lot of this comes to again I believe where we what we have done in creating a
golden calf with with Jesus with God and turning him into something that he's not because when we turn him into
something that he's not it's we have the WWJD right what would Jesus do and then we get in our minds oh well he's this
really good guy that was was loving and comforting and put his arm around everyone and and that's all there is to him.
That's not true.
That isn't true. He has never taken that empathy, the the man, the being with the greatest
empathy of all time through the atoning sacrifice. He has never taken that away from truth.
He's never untethered it. No untethered empathy.
And we we should we should realize this. I mean, read your scriptures and see who he is and
and what he believed. He he fought for truth even when it was uncomfortable uncomfortable for people. And this is
the same approach that Elder Corbridge is taking. He's fighting for truth and it's going to be uncomfortable to people.
It is. It's there's no way around that.
It's always been that way. It has nothing to do with him. It has to do with human nature.
One comment on one social media post said that many leave specifically
because they don't find the Jesus of the Gospels. Really? And who is the Jesus of the Gospels?
That's my first question back to you. Who is the Jesus of the Gospels?
They say it's someone who ate with the sinners. Yep, he did.
He ate with the sinners, but he didn't accept the sin.
He ate with the sinners, but he didn't accept the sin. He didn't exclude people through policy, it says. I wonder what they're referring to there.
H we'll see how he excludes. He does exclude in certain ways because he sticks to truth.
Uh he criticized religious authorities.
Oh, that's convenient. He did. He definitely did.
And he didn't exclus Oh, he didn't exclude people through policy. Well, I want to cover a couple things. I've been meaning to do this for a while on
on the character of Jesus and and and stop
I I hate saying this. I I I say this phrase all the time, but stop making a teddy bear Jesus.
We do this because we want someone who we can rely on and trust and who is good
to us and has our our our best well-being in mind.
13 minutesAnd so we start creating we we cut off one whole side of him and
make things easy for us, right? He's this let me just read some things out of
those gospels. This is the Jesus of the gospel and and this is just a cursory
sampling of who Jesus is, right? part of who he is that we never include.
Here's him. But woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites. Right? So, he's using these terms.
Hypocrites, for you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men, for you neither go in yourselves.
It's pretty direct, right? That that's pretty direct. Not very inclusive sounding.
Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye compass sea and land to make one pro one protoolite. And when
he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. That's not Brigham Young.
That is Jesus.
Keep going. Wo unto you. Woe unto you ye blind guides.
Ye fools and blind for whether is greater the gold of the temple that sanctifieth or that that sanct or what
sanctifith the gold that's Jesus.
Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees hypocrites for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cumin and have omitted the
weightier matters of the law judgment mercy and faith.
He's going directly to truth and he's explaining it through spiritual principles, spiritual truth.
15 minutesBut I guess you can't do that these days because the Jesus of today is not the same of the gospels.
Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye may clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
Woe unto ye scribes and Pharisees. These are all the woes. Woe unto you.
We are like unto whited supplicers. And we all know what that one was about.
I'm going to pass from there. There's several more. and just keep going on this.
Who is Whoa, getting out of hand there. Who is the Jesus of the Gospels?
What What have we made him into? Okay.
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth. He says, "I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set
a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her
mother-in-law, and man's foes shall they of his own household.
Man's foes shall they be they of their his own household. That's contention.
That is division. Now, is he causing the division?
Well, indirectly at least. Why? Because he's telling truth.
Because he's talking about the truth.
And that is what some people are going to do because they're not going to accept it. And they're going to rebel against it. They don't want direct talk because it cuts us under.
And another of his disciples, this is directly with Jesus.
And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
But Jesus said unto him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead." It's not very comforting.
What would you do if a bishop said that to you? No. He's being very direct.
The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Are you going to follow me and and be like that?
What are you going to sacrifice? What are you going to give up?
Oh faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to me.
He calls his own people in his own group, his age group a perverse generation.
This is Jesus also.
Oh fools and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.
the ones you know that were telling the truth
to James and John wanting to call down fire on a Samaritan village. Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. He's rebuking them here.
He rebukes them.
And this is just cursory. You could go on and get pages and pages and pages of this stuff all over the place. Direct
talk coming from the Jesus of the Gospels.
Woe unto thee Chisen. Woe unto thee Baseda.
It shall be more tolerable for Ty and Siden at the day of judgment than for you. And thou capernium which art
exalted unto heaven shall be brought down to hell.
Uh what this trash truck needs a forward gear again. What what are we hearing here?
What is happening? What there there is no untethering from truth. We need to understand that you
know there can't be and this is one thing about our theology that I think sometimes does not get discussed much.
But see God can't do anything different.
We we we want to at some point blame him for how did this happen to me or why am I going through this? Why do I have to
go through this suffering? Why would you let this happen?
I I can't I I don't think you can say it's all up to him.
It's not right. Is he just? Is God just? And if
he is just, he has to follow through on that. Otherwise, he ceases to be God.
There are laws and rules and and let's call them spiritual laws as well as natural laws that that he follows.
That's why he's God because he follows those things. He fits within those things and he's hoping that we can learn also to do the same thing.
That's how we become like him. It's not some arbitrary idea from God that says this is good and this is bad. No, there
is good and there is bad. That is eternal. It is eternal.
And the question is, are we going to submit to that? Are we going to be meek, which means falling under order, falling
under covenants? Are we going to be meek enough to also align ourselves with that order or not?
to join him in that order.
If we start thinking that he's just making these decisions completely on his own without having to fit within a certain framework,
then we start to blame him. Now, is he all wise? Yes. Is he going to make the right decisions?
Yes. Because he's going to fit within that order. Because he has a certain character and he is unchanging.
When we say he is unchanging, he his character does not change. It cannot change or he would cease to be God.
To me, that's the way I think we should think of God's nature. He is within the orders of the the righteous order of the
universe of all things everywhere. So, who is the Jesus of the Bible?
22 minutesHere's another one. Would God allow suffering, such suffering? I heard this for example from
uh some of those that are polygamy deniers, right? It's like God would never let his daughter suffer through these things. Really?
Really.
couple months ago and I'm not talking about the recent storm but or flash flood in Utah but you know there was the one I can't remember I think it was in
the south and it it it completely came through a girls camp and young girls died a bunch
of them died because of that flash flood that went right through the girls camp
you going to allow that flood the flood Noah's flood Would he allow such a thing to the destruction of
so many people when he came to the Americas
23 minutesand visited with the Nephites and the Lamemonites that were righteous?
What happened before that? What happened before we saw God descend, Jesus descend, the
resurrected Christ descend from the sky and show his wounds to everyone?
Yeah. It was the destruction, the complete destruction of the wicked. Would God allow that to happen?
And those that were left over there and righteous, what was their response? They could say, "Well, God allows all of
this, all of these people that I knew to be destroyed.
Do I want nothing to do with that God?" Perhaps there are bigger and better and
more eternal things that are on the other side.
Maybe we're a little myopic in our thinking. How about the pioneers?
The suffering that they went through, the loss of life about a thousand people lost their lives during that those trucks.
Would God allow that? Would he allow that to happen?
God does not untether himself from truth. Tragedy happens. It is a part of life.
Bad people sometimes get the upper hand against good people.
Can you be loyal to God?
And can you go back to the primary questions of is this true? And if your decision is it's not true, okay, your decision is it's not true.
You don't believe the truth claims.
You started off with not liking policies on LGBTQ individuals and you ended up with the book of Abraham was made up.
Okay. All right.
That is your decision and you have your agency.
I don't think that's what Elder Corbage was saying at all.
He was simply being direct and bringing snapping us back to a point where it's like, okay, you're right. This is truth.
I will stick to it. I will travel across the plains if necessary for the gospel and for the truth and for the kingdom.
I am not so privileged in my modern western world
that I will give up things that are so precious, eternal
because I'm uncomfortable.
And I can hear people replying right now to that. Just ticked. Just ticked that I
would say that. Look, make your choice. That's okay. Make your choice.
We all have agency. And agency is what is supreme. Not a comforting teddy bear Jesus. That is not supreme.
Your agency is supreme. You get to choose.
And thank goodness we all get to choose.
But for me and those that are committed to the gospel,
imperfect, very imperfect beings committed to the gospel.
It might require suffering. It might require sacrifice. It might require all of these things.
You know what? It it will whether this life or the next. I believe all those things are true.
How are you proven to become more like God? How does that happen?
Oh, you're going to go through some uncomfortable times, but it is true. And there is a greater good. And sacrifice is giving up
something good for something better down the road.
And that's what Elder Corbs was saying and I support him 100%. And I wish we had so much more direct talk
that inspired even challenged and motivated each of us to become something better.
I want to end with one thing. Chuck Chandler Henry and his tragic passing a couple days ago.
Uh there's been a lot of comments online. again.
I I just I just don't understand why people would take that opportunity of such tragedy
to be right.
to say that you're right and that that's the most important thing to you in that moment to steal man your own
position or to come back and talk about uh the unkindness of Chuck which is certainly not true. He was direct.
He was direct.
There was a comment online that Hank Smith responded to on X and
I would recommend that you go look at that.
I thought it was it's appropriate, it's right, it's true.
And he was pushing back on it. He was not causing contention.
He measured his response and gave the appropriate response. Good for him.
Good for him. Thanks for listening.
