okay this is the come follow me
lesson entitled you must be born again
this lesson just as easily could have
been named water women and weddings
because they are a consistent theme for
John throughout the book but especially
here in chapters two three and four that
we are covering we need to back up
though first to chapter one I want to go
over just a couple things because John
goes into Chapter one remember chapter
one is where he talks a little about
about the word becoming flesh kind of in
a creation theme and he sets up his
entire book in Chapter one so I just
want to quickly cover a couple of points
here first of all John is a priest and
so he's going to talk about very
priestly things and he's going to talk
about everything in a very symbolic even
more than the other books a very
symbolic manner and so in Chapter 1 he
covers this and in fact he talks about
being born of God right in Chapter one
that you're not we're not just to be
born of blood and of the flesh but that
we need to be born of God and we touch
on that with Nicodemus in Chapter three
and then he goes over John the Baptist
which represents the Aaronic priesthood
and the lower law and then he covers
Jesus Christ as representing the
Melchizedek Priesthood and the higher
law he has a verse there in chapter one
verse 17 that says for the law was given
by Moses but grace and truth came by
Jesus Christ so he's setting up this
higher and lower law for us throughout
the entire book and this is what we'll
see in chapters two three and four in
this lesson and then he sneaks in this
little tidbit here this this nice little
nugget at the end of chapter one when
Christ is speaking with Nathanael and he
says says here that Nathanael answered
and saith unto him unto Jesus rabbi thou
art the son
God so he's professing who he is Andy
and then he says thou art the king of
Israel and so this is a Melchizedek
title in a sense meaning the king of
righteousness the king of Israel and it
is a precursor to what John covers
throughout the entire book so let's and
those are some important things to
notice here because as we go into
chapter 2 here what John is doing is he
is showing how Jesus is the new
Melchizedek and the symbolism in the
story of the marriage at Cana is is one
of a very symbolic of the monistic
priesthood and of Christ bringing the
new Melchizedek it's interesting in the
very first verse that John mentions that
the mother of Jesus was there at the at
the wedding at the marriage and I think
that that's important I think that what
he is doing here is showing that Jesus
is the king the prophesied King the
Messiah the new Melchizedek the reason
that's showing that is that whenever you
have a king you have to have the title
nearby of mother the mother needs to be
present because the mother is the one
that is going to give birth to the king
and there is a number of ways that that
is symbolic in in the gospel and in the
Old Testament the mother is the throne
so anciently when you saw a king sitting
on a throne the throne was the mother
because you always knew who the mom was
and and so she represents that authority
in that sense she is the throne she
might even be the crown as well but she
is the throne so for example in the
third facsimile in the Book of Abraham
you have Osiris the king sitting on the
throne which represents which Abraham is
the Osiris a lot of people were v Osiris
right they are we all wanted to be
Osiris
in Egypt because as we were the Osiris
we were the king it's the same thing in
Israel right there is a temple festival
every year in the Old Testament where
you had the feast at the feast of
tabernacles where the king represented
Abraham excuse me Abe resented
he represented the temporal king he
represented the Messiah or that is
Jehovah and who would come down and take
on the sins of the world he would also
represent all of the men in the
congregation and the Queen would
represent all the women in the
congregation that were there at the
Feast of Tabernacles and so in a sense
every man and every woman there in the
congregation were the king and the Queen
they were the Osiris so to speak as he
is you the way that you would interpret
that in Egypt and so it's it's important
to understand why Jesus was called the
king of Israel it's not just that he had
the lineage of Mary and and even a
stepfather Joseph but he was the king in
the sense that he's the one that the
king of Israel represented when he went
into the Holy of Holies at the temple
festival and came back out through the
veil and and so he was that that was the
Messiah that was the king of the real
king of Israel was Jehovah and so when
we think of Christ with the the writing
up above the cross the end of his life
where we see the king of the Jews and
how everyone was making fun of him it's
not just because of his lineage he is
not just the son of David and the king
of the Jews because of his lineage he is
jehovah who was represented in the
temple festival as the messiah who was
the real king and so that's an important
thing that's had that that's been set up
here and you would have the mother
be present in that kind of a scenario
you'll see in a lot of the examples of
where the birthright was given the
mother is very involved with Abraham you
have Sarah who moves the birthright from
Ishmael over to Isaac
it's Rebecca
who comes in and and causes the change
and the confusion for Isaac when he ends
up giving the birthright to to Jacob
over Esau that's because the mom was
responsible for that and they're just
telling it in a different manner it was
also Bathsheba who said who that Solomon
was going to be King and so she kind of
represented the throne so that's why
it's she's Mary as being represented
here at the very beginning of a chapter
because she represents this is a
representation of Jesus as the
Melchizedek as the King of the Jews he's
born of the mother so in that festival
you would have the king coming out of
the veil coming through the veil out of
the Holy of Holies and he's being born
as a son of God a son of David and that
is represented in Psalm 110 you can read
that there and then you have here a
scenario at the at the marriage where
you have these pots and there's six
waterpots of stone and this is an
important issue the stone represents
purification remember that John is a
priest he is always kind of obsessed
with purification and cleanliness and in
the purification laws in the Book of
Leviticus you would not have clay play
pots because if they could get dirty
then you have to smash them and get you
know bringing brand-new ones but with
stone pots it was different they were
very expensive they're made of one piece
and but these are stone pots of you're
probably at a priestly home here we're
probably talking about a priestly home
the other thing is that there is the
number six which is kind of interesting
anciently and even today sometimes at a
Jewish wedding you will have a reference
to the creation story and you would have
a reference to the Garden of Eden story
and that's very much a part of has been
a part of a Jewish wedding and so here
you have these six days of creation if
you will or falling just short of
perfection with the number seven and
Christ here is the seventh he's the one
that kind of completes this and and
makes this perfect so six we'll see that
number come up again in Chapter four
with it with the Samaritan woman at the
well so six is important so Jesus has
the the pots filled with water and he
changes the water to wine this is his
first miracle according to John and this
is also a reference back to Moses
remember as we've spoken of before there
is a conflict between Moses and this new
milk acidic the Messiah coming because
the Jews have taken out Christ the
Messiah from being the pinnacle for the
most part or there is this strong
theological backing to this in Jerusalem
and instead elevated Moses to the top
and you see this conflict throughout the
New Testament especially in the Gospels
and so here you have Moses Moses first
public miracle was changing the water of
the Nile to blood right to wine or - to
blood and so here Christ is changing the
water to wine so there's a reference
back to Moses and saying hey that was
just Moses but this is now Christ and
this means something very different here
the ruler of the feast ends up tasting
the wine and saying you know this is
great wine why are we you know and comes
back and he actually speaks to the
bridegroom now this almost seems like
he's talking to Jesus
and but he says he's talking to the
bridegroom and because the bridegroom
was responsible for the wine at the
party at the Met at the marriage and it
doesn't say that this is Jesus and it is
beside the point as to whether or not as
many have thought that this is a wedding
for Jesus but what we are looking at is
John setting this up so that he is
showing Jesus as the Messiah as the
McKissack as the bridegroom this is one
of the titles so remember in the Old
Testament you would often have a
reference to the Lord talking about the
talking about Israel as being the the
bride or and Jehovah being the
bridegroom and so this is saying John
saying this is Jehovah this is the god
of the Old Testament this is God who has
come down in the flesh as he said in
Chapter 1 and he is the bridegroom and
so the wedding setting is very important
for John so the ruler of the feast says
that this wine is fabulous and why are
we having the great the better wine now
instead of at the beginning because
usually you would have the best wine at
the beginning when everyone could still
taste it and they weren't drunk yet and
now later on you get the watered down
stuff and now here that he's saying that
this is a better wine and again this is
John's way of narrating this where he's
saying we are moving from something okay
you know a lower law to something better
and he does this over and over again we
then moved to John showing Christ here
cleansing the temple at the beginning of
his ministry in the other three Gospels
in the synoptic Gospels we have Christ
cleansing the temple at the end of his
ministry now it's possible it happened
at the beginning and at the end and may
have happened every time he came every
year to the temple as well but why is
this mentioned and why is this happening
the reason is is that in the Old
Testament it used to be that the day of
a
holman and the feast of tabernacles were
the greatest event the most holy event
the most sacred event in the Jewish
calendar and here at the Day of
Atonement the high priest would cleanse
the altar with the blood would cleanse
the temple would cleanse the people even
and would go into the Holy of Holies and
cleanse the Holy of Holies cleanse the
Ark of the Covenant cleanse the throne
and this is a representation of doing
that as Christ as the high priest so it
is a threat to the Jews that are in
charge here at the time especially the
Sadducees who were in charge of the
temple and it's showing you we had talks
about him making a whip or a scourge
where he has where he's taking that and
he's whipping but when you think about
the motion of that right of whipping
this you think about maybe if you've
seen a scene or been to a Catholic Mass
where there's this motion that comes
from the Day of Atonement where there
was blood being splattered where it
would cover up things yom kippur means
the day of covering or it that's what
atonement is it's covering or healing
and so that's what this is a
representation of so John's putting this
out there saying this is who this is
this is eyewitness to you that this is
the new Melchizedek that this is Jehovah
that this is the high priest that is
you're witnessing here and and he's
showing this right from the get-go at
the beginning in the first miracle in
the end going through the 1st and 2nd
3rd 4th chapters here then at Jerusalem
at the temple the people there are
asking for a sign saying that showing
that he is the son of God that he is the
Messiah and Jesus says I will destroy
this temple and in three days I will
raise it up and then the Jews said you
know it was 40 in 6 years that it took
to build this temple and wilt thou rear
it up in three days
but John says then but he spake of the
temple of his body I think this is a
very interesting point because we
oftentimes hear or we're told or we make
a parallel between the temple that we go
to in our bodies as a temple but we
shouldn't I don't think it seems to me
that we shouldn't rub on ease as a
temple in that sense and there is the
temple we go to in our bodies are a
temple I think it's the other way around
I think that's what Jesus is kind of
saying here our body is the temple it is
what will be eternal the temple that we
have here on earth is is a
representation of eternal things but it
will be gone one day and so where we
think of the temple as being our bodies
as being a temple like that of the the
temple that we go to to go through the
ordinances it's really the other way
around
where our body is the temple and the
temple we go to is more a representation
of our body you think about how
fanatical we are about keeping the
temples clean and groomed and perfectly
built and the finest materials and we
get our an idea of really how we should
be treating our bodies and I see the
word of wisdom in that way right the
word of wisdom is something that helps
us keep our bodies clean think about our
diets and what we're putting into our
bodies how does that affect being able
to let Christ into our lives I think it
affects us tremendously and if we have a
bad diet and we're stuffing ourselves
with sugar and simple carbs and
preservatives and and packaged products
it's probably more and more difficult
for us to keep our bodies clean in a way
that we're able to receive the spirit
are we exercising what do we do to allow
the spirit to really thrive with
I think that's a little bit what Jesus
is saying here with with the Jews okay
we will continue with chapters three and
four in the next episode
