Yesterday, on Maundy Thursday, King Charles gave an address very similar to King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon. This is not a coincidence. Kings and Queens have always had a contract/covenant with the people to act as representatives of God and to have the people follow suit.
King Charles refers to Jesus washing the feet of the disciples, while King Benjamin is likely referring to a tradition of temple drama and coronation.
conference A Day of Reckoning this is
tomorrow Saturday March 30th with
keynote speaker Abraham gilotti now
wouldn't it be great if you could just
gain a little bit more understanding of
Isaiah and add that context into your
understanding of not just the book of
Isaiah but therefore the Book of Mormon
understanding The Book of Mormon that
much more and understanding our times
the times that we live in and you will
always have that and this conference
will help you gain some knowledge and
context to the book of Isaiah and his
prophecies go to Book of Mormon isaiah.
comom onference again book of Morman
isaiah. comom conference and
register here we
go
all right welcome to Quick show my name
is Greg Matson and I am your host in
this episode we have King Charles and
King Benjamin both offering messages of
service now my focus here is on the
message and how kings make covenants to
serve their people including King
Benjamin perhaps King Hezekiah which is
what we may be getting there in uh as a
representation of the suffering servant
now I want to be clear I am in no way
comparing King Charles to King Benjamin
I don't know much about King Charles I
don't even know how religious he is but
I'm comparing the words I think that
this is a tradition that goes back
through royalty for not just Generations
but for Millennia and this was probably
tradition a tradition in well I know it
was a tradition in the ancient Middle
East and with the Kings of Israel and
Judah now this message from King Charles
is given yesterday which was Monday
Thursday and it references the washing
of the feet of Jesus and the
disciples as an act of service as the
King of Kings especially the King which
is a title given often to Jesus in that
last week of his life as he enters in
through a royal procession into
Jerusalem on the donkey m the m service
on M Thursday comes from
commandment and it comes from for
example John 13:34 which is a new
commandment I give unto you that ye love
one another as I have loved you that ye
also love one another and I've talked a
lot on this podcast about loving is that
service love is the condescension below
others it is in fact an order of Heaven
which is the opposite of what we have
here temporally where the greatest among
you is the least among you and and Jesus
references this at the Last Supper on
that Monday Thursday where the disciples
are all asking Jesus you know who who is
the greatest Among Us which is not to
say hey how great am I what they're
asking is who is the leader who is in
charge and Jesus again is trying to
teach the order of Heaven which is the
greatest among you will be the one who
is the least among you the one who
serves everyone else in fact later that
evening the King of Kings God himself
will lower himself below all of us in
the Garden of Gethsemane as he takes on
the sins of the world that is the
example that we are to follow so King
Charles message of service here on
Monday Thursday is referring to that
order of Heaven that a temporal king and
queen are supposed to follow let's go to
the message
ladies and gentlemen it is for me a
great sadness that I cannot be with you
all today the M service has a very
special place in my heart it has its
origin in the life of Our Lord who knelt
before his disciples and to their great
surprise washed their travel weary feet
okay again I mean first of all it's
exciting just to hear a head of state or
an ambassador if you will uh speak
specifically about the Life of Christ
and his service to take it from
scripture is really refreshing in doing
so he deliberately gave to them and to
us all an example of how we should serve
and care for each other in this country
we are blessed by all the different
services that exist for our welfare but
over and above these organizations and
their selfless staff we need and benefit
greatly from those who extend the and of
friendship to us especially in a time of
need okay so what he's going to refer to
here is what they call M money that they
give out every Monday Thursday each year
uh it's to 150 different individuals and
organizations and those those that are
you know Above and Beyond in service
right it's a
recognition of service among uh the
citizens of the UK the 150 men and women
who've been chosen today to receive the
M money from my wife are wonderful
examples of such
kindness of going Way Beyond the Call of
Duty and of giving so much of their
lives to the service of others all right
so we're going to get an example of this
from King Benjamin's words about the
citizens offering up service like the
king offers up service this act of
worship here in wster Cathedral reminds
me of the Pledge I made at the beginning
of the coronation service this is great
to follow Christ's example not to be
served but to serve ah okay now you're
talking about King Benjamin's message
this is the same message and why would
it be the same message well because
kings and queens are bound to act in the
stead of God temporally right or to
represent God to represent the king of
kings and they make this every year
anciently in the coronation ceremony or
a reconation ceremony like what is
happening with King Benjamin right
remember King Benjamin is the son of
what I would call Grandpa mosiah king
mosiah and the father
of grandson mosiah who is about to be
coronated after the speech of
Benjamin I have always tried to do and
continue to do with my whole heart it is
my special prayer today that our Lord's
example of serving one another might
continue to inspire us and to strengthen
all our
communities may God bless you all this
Easter okay so I want you to take note
of the different levels of of of roles
that should be offering service right
there is God who offers service this is
the worship service here in in uh
referring to the washing of the feet of
the disciples from the greatest among
them the King of Kings it is King
Charles Covenant that he makes right the
contract he makes at coronation to serve
the people and not be served and then it
is the citizens of the UK that are to
serve one another now let's go over to
King Benjamin's speech here and let's go
to mosiah
2:14 it says and even I myself have
labored with my own hands that I might
serve
you again it it's so much of scripture I
believe is ritual that doesn't mean that
he doesn't intend to say this that this
isn't felt
heartfelt but this is probably a message
that is given often if not always in a
coronation ceremony and A Feast of
Tabernacles or Passover Festival just
like it is a ritual for the king or
queen of England to offer a message of
service on Monday Thursday let's keep
going with this going down to verse 16
it says and behold I tell you these
things that you may learn wisdom that
you may learn that when ye are in the
service of your fellow beings ye are
only in the service of your God right so
this is now bringing it down to the
level of the citizens of the people so I
serve you that is my job to serve you
not to be served but it is your job to
serve one another going back to the
phrase of do as I do right love one
another as I have loved you and then you
notice here in verse 18 it goes back to
the idea of King right this is about
coronation and his contract his Covenant
with the people and the land and with
God in in acting as a representative of
God he says behold you have called me
your king and if I whom you call your
king do serve you do labor to serve you
then ought not ye to labor to serve one
another right so you need to do the same
as I am Contracting to do and behold
also if I whom you call your king have
spent his days in your service and yet
has been in the service of God do Merit
any thanks from you oh how you ought to
thank your heavenly King so again we get
this order of Heaven which has to do
with also the priesthood right the kings
hold the
priesthood which is the greatest among
you is the least among you or is the
servant of
all that's how the priesthood is
supposed to work longsuffering
persuasion Etc it is charity and when
you look back at the coronation even of
King Charles or all the way back to
Queen Elizabeth and Beyond you'll see
these Oaths that are made and Covenants
that are made by those Royal members of
serving others serving and worshiping in
their Church the Church of England right
King Charles is the head of the Church
of England even above the bishop of
Canterbury and these covenants are
supposed to be followed but of course a
wicked King will do the exact opposite
and then the people are not loving one
another as much and not serving each
other as much and they're not worshiping
as much the king and following the
doctrine of Christ which is the greatest
among you is the least among you I'm
actually very fascinated with the entire
coron Services especially in Britain
because they they you learn a lot there
about what we see in the temple and what
we see anciently in biblical scholarship
with Kings in Israel and Judah and other
ancient NE Eastern coronation ceremonies
they're very religious which is pretty
out of step with today's secular
Societies in the west now obviously in
this Easter week I hope we can remember
to serve one another and to love one
another as Jesus loved how do we come
follow him right how do we do come
follow me it's not just his teachings
that is secondary to me it is primarily
is do as he did obey the Commandments
give the glory to the father condescend
below others in bearing their burdens
with them and serving them and in this
way we can follow the path of Jesus's
last week of his life Happy
