Julie Beck in 2009 August of 2009 going into the broadcast of the seminaries and
institutes uh kind of a training for them the iconic talk of family the
Theology of family where sister Beck says that anything that is anti-am is
anti chist it's fascinating looking back at this 15 years later and see where we've come in the last 15 years by the
way sister Beck's father grant grant Banger was my dad's Mission president
they were pretty close a lot of stories about her dad who was a a general Authority including an assistant to the
apostles now this episode is brought to you by go and do travel I am the official spokesman for them great
company very happy to be involved with them I just got back from Egypt and turkey doing the gospel on the Nile
Cruise that's right a cruise down the Nile if you can imagine that with all
these incredible buildings temples and walking where Abraham Joseph of Egypt
and Moses walked over the next 12 months a couple of these trips are already sold out but there are a couple still

go so this is a fascinating talk that uh sister Beck gives back 15 years ago
starting off I just want to give a quote that she gives later on in this uh instructional talk she says this
generation again 20 9 this generation will be called upon to defend the
doctrine of the family as never before if they don't know the doctrine they
can't defend it here's my question in the church today are we
doing better at defending the family or not as well and if Sister Beck is
correct then that would be because we don't know the doctrine enough we live
in a time where it's almost questionable whether we should bring up something about the family proclamation because
you don't know what kind of reaction you're going to get I don't know that sister Beck and others at this time would have
understood just how much pressure would be inside of our church to talk about
the traditional family and going outside of that into identitarianism but listen to all of the
truth bombs that sister Beck gives us in this instructional talk I know how much
money they spend on the rising generation I know how many people are employed to take care of the rising
generation why do they invest so much as I've met with young single
adults around the world I asked this question why do they invest so much and
in their focus groups and their firesides these are the answers I get and you should be interested in these
answers you might ask your own students these questions but they say well we are
the future church leaders education is the key to success
all good answers we need training so we can stay strong our testimonies are
strengthened in our classes we need to meet other great latterday Saint youth
we are the hope of the future other ones say and other ones say we appreciate it
and another one said well they spend so much money on us because we're worth it
I was very interested in those answers and uh you have to know that
after asking for response after response and most other responses are
exhausted do I ever hear so I will someday be a better father or a better
mother or a better family leader okay so I just want to say something on this
this is this is so crucial to understand what she is saying saying here the
instruction that you're getting as youth as single adults should primarily be
focused centered of course on Christ but understanding how you're growing and
developing as a potential father or a future father and a future mother a
future husband and a future wife not just as an individual that's of course
crucial but how you're going to fill those roles because you're going to be
the building block of a new family which is the building block of society and the building block
of a Living Church in terms of its people let's keep going here we know
that through the atonement of Jesus Christ Our immortality has been taken care of but eternal life is our
responsibility to assist with and there are C this is where we we we we
misunderstand and this is what's happening a lot in a lot of teachings I think that that we're hearing out there
in factions online that are pulling away from the temple and pulling away from family and trying to say that these
things are not really a part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ I'm talking about
the traditional family but it all is about Jesus Christ and it's all about
family and this is why I say we've pulled away somewhat from you know and again I'm not talking about Salt Lake
I'm talking about at the church level at the Lord level we've p pulled away somewhat from talking about exaltation
and eternal life exaltation is about marriage it's about family it's about
the temple and those that want to poo poo the temple which is a a movement
that is really growing online inside of the church they want to say that the
temple has nothing to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ it has everything to do
with the Gospel of Jesus Christ the doctrine of Christ is the doctrine of
family because to take full advantage of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ is
to earnestly strive toward exaltation and to become Complete Joint
heirs with Christ she's got a lot more to say here what is essential to achieve
eternal life we know that we cannot achieve eternal life without the
ordinances and Covenants of the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ we find other
teachings about living the Commandments serving giving away all we have to the
Lord but all of those things are based on the covenants we make and without those covenants we cannot achieve
eternal life okay I want to say something here again and again I'm I'm kind of on this subject quite a bit lately about exaltation in the temple
because there there is such a push against this right now the Gospel of Jesus Christ is as we know it is all
about becoming the ordinances of the temple are not a
checklist the ordinances of the temple are tied to covenants and the covenants
in the temple are to help us bind ourselves to Christ now in binding
ourselves to Christ we are binding ourselves to be joint HS with him and
the whole process of going through the temple is a metaphor it's a similitude of our real
life and of the Plan of Salvation that tells us who we are in
the premortal world why we're down here on Earth why we should be following the
prophets who we are individually who we can become in terms of family reaching
the veil and seeing the face of God and then being sealed at the altars of the temple that
entire process in going through that that is the Plan of Salvation that is the path that is the way narrow is the
way that way is as I often times say is the Royal procession it's the the way
that Jesus Took to the temple in the last week of his life on Palm Sunday and really his whole week there but that's
what we're going through in the temple is that last week of Jesus's life there
is a strong effort out there right now to pull the temple away from from Jesus
Christ and the doctrine of Christ to pull away the traditional family and the
sealing of those families away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ that there is no
separation of these things just as we make covenants in the temple God made a
covenant with us an oath and a covenant with us by saying that he would send his
son to pave the way and why is that necessary because the the doctrine of
exaltation tells us that there's an obstacle that we cannot get through it
is the Cherub of the Garden of Eden and everything about the Gospel of Jesus Christ has to do with this Obstacle of
getting past judgment in order to get to the Tree of Life as sister Beck stated
here the verse of Moses 1 139 for this is for behold this is my work and my
glory to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man well the work
there is getting through the Obstacle of judgment because an eternal law there is
no unclean thing can enter the kingdom of God that's a problem and eternal life
means building a family it is one and the same thing it is building a
righteous family it is cleansing The Vessel internally individually and then
reaching out beyond that into family and then even into Community that's why we
share the gospel and prepare missionaries because heavenly father says all my children need to be taught
and given an opportunity to make the covenants that will save them that's why we build temples because heavenly father
says all my children need an opportunity to make these covenants and so we do
vicarious work for those who have died father wants every one of his children
to have an opportunity and that's why we teach the gospel to our youth so they'll
understand and make and keep those covenants that they have to have to re
receive eternal life so let's talk about um first of all the Theology of the
family okay I want to say something here I love this term uh we talk about things
like Temple theology right that the temple theology is something that is that is Central to the
Gospel of Jesus Christ and and to the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints so is the Theology
of the family we can call this a family theology we need to really focus in on
this more a family Theology and I know that's going to irk some people think
about that and why would it because of the teachings of the world because of
secular ideas and ideologies that are entering in to the culture of the church
I suggest that you start using that term we believe in a family theology it is an
order of God and stepping outside of that order is pulling us away from the
doctrine of exaltation she expounds on this a little more we basically in the church we don't
always say this in the same words but we have in the Church of Jesus Christ of
lty saints a Theology of the family and it's based on the creation
the fall and the atonement I don't know how well your
students understand that they may be able to re to recite the facts about the
creation but do they know that this is a Theology of the family the creation of
the Earth was the creation of an Earth where a family could live it was the
creation of a man and a women who were the two essential halves of a family
okay and understand through your example isn't it interesting that we
have in Genesis a very basic this is kind of like when the family proclamation came out it seems so simple
and basic and I remember in '95 when it came out it's like what what is this for this is obvious I mean yeah we're we're
we're proclaiming what we believe in here with the family but isn't this what everybody believes and now look at us
today right 20 years later uh or 30 years later we're looking at this at the family proclamation and all
of a sudden it's controversial so what has happened is this culture and idea has has moved world viw has moved away
from where we were and that family proclamation should be a an eternal
anchor for us to look at and to grab on to it seemed so simple at the time and
now it's like okay I need to focus in on this more and I mean all of it it's not
like well let's you know line item out a few of these things here and and cross them out no I think that that was prayed
over earnestly I think that it was given by inspiration it is based all of it is
based on scriptural doctrinal principles and Genesis is the same thing we go back
and we look at okay there's a creation and then there's Adam and Eve and there's a man and a woman think about it
a man and a woman how basic is that and yet look at what is happening to even
the terminology the definition of a man the definition of a woman this order
that is so plainly laid out at the foundation and beginning of the Stick of
Judah of a man and a woman and they're commanded to multiply and replenish the
Earth to create a family look how messed up we're getting today and the second thing is I'm actually going to cover
that a little bit later here after she goes over this a little more it was not about a creation of a man and a woman
who happened to have a family it was intentional all along that Adam and Eve
form an eternal family it was part of the plan that these two be sealed and
form an eternal family unit that's a model for us that was the plan of
Happiness your Plan of Salvation the fall provided a way for
the family to grow through the leadership of Eve and
Adam they chose to have a mortal experience the fall made it possible for
Adam and Eve to have a family to have sons and daughters they needed to grow in numbers and grow in experience the so
again just a wonderful point that she makes here she's tying the pillars of
the Plan of Salvation of of the creation the fall the atonement and and then of course going
into exaltation here she's tying those right into the family the purpose of all of this and you can see that in Genesis
right you can see it in in second Nephi 2 with Lehi teaching about the Plan of
Salvation about the Garden of Eden and that man and woman would not be able to create or procreate without a fall that
doesn't mean they didn't have the capability but they didn't have the knowledge or the desire at a minimum to
create to to to procreate and so the fall was necessary to create families
love that the atonement allows for the family to be sealed together
eternally and it allows for families to have eternal growth and Perfection the plan of happiness and the
Plan of Salvation was a plan created for families okay so again I just want to
reiterate this is you canot divide the Gospel of Jesus Christ right the the the
the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ you cannot separate that from exaltation
the world wants to eliminate exaltation our good brothers and sisters and the
rest of the Christian world don't teach exaltation it is just the Salvation
level and that is what these movements online are trying to get us to partake
of now but exaltation is what the atoning sacrifice
is really about and that is what the Church of Jesus Christ of latterday Saints is built for we're all going to
have immortality the church can also help those that are going to believe in
Christ and follow many of The Commandments but may not become who they
could become and gain exaltation that is a harsh Doctrine for some people well
why doesn't God just let everybody have exaltation he can't we need to understand that he
cannot allow that because if he did he would cease to be God is God just if God
is just then our agency which builds our Character
Matters and and he is going to go along with Justice we cannot eliminate Justice
when we eliminate Justice we're eliminating Mercy when when you take away Justice
you eliminate the entire reason to have mercy you take away Justice you take
away the reason to have the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ in the first
place if there is no judgment and there's no justice in place then there
is no need for a savior and this is what was taught for example the with the amonites where Elma and AMC went to
teach and they talked a lot about the Garden of Eden and the creation and the fall why because they're setting up
those pillar to teach the ammonites and those ammonites did not
believe in Justice or a judgment and and we're we're creeping
toward that building up that teddy bear Jesus where where there is no judge in
place but what you're really doing when you remove that and the scriptures are
are full of these examples of talking about getting rid of judgment and what happens and who's really the author of
that idea but when you do that you remove the purpose of the atoning sacrifice and
therefore you get rid of the idea of a savior the ammonites did not believe in
a saor the entire Book of Mormon is about getting rid of Christ and how the dissenters all do
this they all go to the lamanites and I have talked about this so much but but
learn from The Book of Mormon The Book of Mormon wants you to understand that
judgment exists it needs to exist because God is just and that creates the
main problem of all of our existence how do we overcome judgment and it's
twofold one from above condescension of Jesus Christ born into mortality and
then lowering himself to Earth and then lowering himself in baptism lowering himself on the GU in the garden luring
himself in a sense as he's raised up on the cross and then of course being
raised up in Resurrection as he overcomes all of it and the other part is us and the covenants that we make
going through the temple to bind ourselves to Christ and to become more like him and put on the character of God
and as we put on that character of God and go through the entire Covenant path we build a family
eventually to become more and more like the father and a heavenly
mother the Gospel of Jesus Christ is one and the same with the temple ordinances
and Covenants and with the ceiling and Order of family to put a little bit of an
explanation point on this idea of justice and mercy here's a quote from warrren W weby truth without without
love is brutality and love without truth is
hypocrisy so truth here is basically saying that's like the word it's saying
that this is like justice right you have to have both you can't just say love is
love no you need to say there's love and truth you can't just say there's Grace
that's what we're really focused on now you can't just say there's Grace there
is Grace and Justice and they work together if there is no justice there is
no exaltation it's not just the side of the punishment right it's the side of the
reward all right more from Sister Beck here I don't think very many of the
rising generation understand that the main pillars of our theology are
centered in family when we see speak of qualifying
for the blessings of eternal life we mean qualifying for the blessings of Eternal families this was Christ
Doctrine and this is some of what was restored that had been lost the
understanding and clarity about family again that is very true we talk about the Lost plain the plain and
precious things that have been lost and and family is definitely a big part of this you've heard me talk about the
flattening of the hierarchy with a deuteronomist in the time of Lehi it it's in a sense part of what that did is
is it got rid of the family of God there's no son there's no mother there's
no there's no plurality in the premortal world in or in heaven and as you get rid of that
model then then you actually get rid of the model on Earth you destroy it you corrupt it the
doctrine of Christ is the doctrine of families the blessings the Earth is
wasted when did we learn that let's turn in our scriptures to Doctrine and Covenant section two okay so here's what
she's going to cover section two as you can see here is all about the sealing power and the and
the the spirit of Elijah if you will right this is an extract from Joseph Smith's history relating to the words of
the Angel Moroni to Joseph Smith the prophet while in the house of the prophet's father at Manchester New York
on the evening of September 21st right this is uh rashash Shana the beginning
of of the Feast of trumpets which is why Moroni has the trumpet and Moroni was
the last of a long line of historians uh who made the record that that is now before the world okay well
what are we getting here right and I'm just going to cover the summary here a little bit but Elijah is to reveal the
priesthood what do you mean reveal the priesthood a lot of times when we refer to priesthood we're talking about the ordinances and covenants that go along
with those ordinances the temple houses the priesthood it's the
ordinances right and then the promises of the fathers are planted in the hearts of the children now remember that this
happens before Joseph ever even sees the
plates of gold okay Moroni comes and and give and and and talks about Malachi 4
the last couple of verses in the entire Old Testament are about Sealing a family
about Temple work right from the GetGo and what is stated here on this go
to verse two and he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers and the hearts of the
children shall turn to their fathers verse three if it were not so this is
not the same but it's close to what we get in Malachi the whole Earth would be utterly wasted at his coming so what are
we saying here it if we did not have Temple work if we did not have the ordinances if we did not do go through
the ceiling built through the priesthood and building families and create that
order see that that's what it's about it's not like it's not a checklist it's
we're we're we're creating the order of God as we become more like him when we
build families that makes all the sense in the world and the Earth would utterly
be wasted at his coming why is that that's because that's what the Earth is for
that's why we have the creation account given to us at the beginning of
the temple drama right because the Earth is being created we learn about order there if we
pay attention we learn about Covenant but that that Earth is that's being
built there and everything around it is for us to build families that's the
purpose of it that's what Malachi is saying that's what we're getting here in Doctrine and Covenants 2o and and if we
don't do the temple work if we don't build families then the entire Earth will have
been wasted because that is the purpose of creating the Earth to create
families we don't teach that enough and the proclamation on the
family was written to reinforce that it was reinforced to talk about the
family being Central to the Creator's plan without okay again this is is
coming from the family proclamation right the family is Central to the Creator's plan the order of the family
the family theology that we carry with us in the church that we teach is Central to the
plan the family there is no plan there is no reason for it I'm not certain
that everyone of the rising generation understands that with Clarity
I think that went over so let's review a little bit now now I'm not going to
cover you know all the threats that she talks about there some of it's kind of interesting because there's a lot more
than there was back then uh I'm just going to go through a list here of what she covers she covers the marriage rates
which have gotten worse uh age as far as being pushed back marriage being pushed
back it's it's worse now right we're getting married older and older uh fewer
kids and birth rate of course we've done something recently on that about the
reverse population bomb that's that's happening in the west divorce rates back
then 1/4th of births out of wedlock we're getting closer to
oneir that's you know very concerning and here here's a question I
would have for you I mean listen to what she's saying about all this and look at how solid it is look at it is this is
truth this is a big serving heap of Truth and I don't know how well this
would go over in some of our WS I think in most of them it would go
fine but we're going to make some people uncomfortable and I don't know that that's the worst thing to do it's not
that you're trying to create contention that is so misused but it's you know my wife who is
so solid in the church you know and she she uh I gave this example I think once
before but she she was a companion speaker of mine as as a high Council
speaker I I had a a I think I had a companion speaker that had bowed out and
so in the last minute I'm like look will you are you willing to speak with me of
course not my favorite thing to do to ask her but she did and she spoke on the family she spoke on the family
proclamation and she came back and sat down during the arest hymn and she said to me she go I started to think like wow
is this okay for me to talk about because of the it's not it's mostly the
culture as a whole not just in the church but in the west that we're starting to get that is a fight against
the order of family and and the tolerance of saying well well family is
much more than that and look there's an ideal and we can't drop the ideal you cannot drop the ideal you
cannot drop the ideal of exaltation no and not at any cost and she says you know I started to
think in the back of my mind as I'm speaking him I'm a little concerned about this and then she says to herself why would I be concerned about this this
is truth and and I'm not going to back down from it right but but you can see
how there there's just that little voice in your head sometimes that says well
maybe I should be worried about speaking about this I don't want to cause a problem I don't want to ruffle any
feathers and and there's a way to do it that isn't good that's like you're trying to drive it into someone but if
you're teaching with a spirit and you're teaching the order of God and you're
teaching the law of Chast we losing that then there should
be no problem in standing firmly on two feet while you are loving the person or
the group that you are speaking to but there is so much fight against this
today and look I mean we we we we we deal with adversity we deal
with the adversity we acknowledge it we know that there are uh thing people
don't have a perfect life they don't have a perfect setup they may not have perfect opportunity they may have less
opportunity they may have things they have to deal with in their in mental illness or they might have um you know
they're they're a different sexual orientation yeah we're we're Fallen
people and so we have to work through these things but but you don't give up the ideal we we don't you know stop
talking about it and and jump down into the spiral of Silence just because we're afraid to speak up on these things
conflict is not necessarily contention that word has been weaponized
contention with the uh talk of uh of from from president
Nelson conflict is not necessarily contention if you are not going to go
along with Babylon if you're not going to go along with the culture falling away from religion from Christianity
from the doctrine of Christ and from the family then there is going to be conflict there is no way around it the
all of the scriptures is with about the prophets in conflict with the people are
they causing contention conflict is not necessarily
contention and peace another big topic here that's been weaponized peace is not
surrender of Truth can you remember those two things conflict is not necessarily contention
and peace is not a surrender of Truth Now the big statement here I want to get
to this from uh sister Beck some of the threats to the family we have to know
what we're fighting against and if our young people is targeting young women
Satan knows this he will never have a body he will never have a
family and he will Target those young women who create the bodies to come and
what I'm finding it interesting in verse 18 that he did preach unto them leading the way the hearts of many causing them
to lift up their heads in wickedness yay leading away many women to commit whoredoms and also men
okay but here's the focus it is on women it's leading away many women to commit whoredom because that is how you destroy
the family and that is how you stop bringing children into the world you
destroy the family women are the ones who create the bodies for the spirits
and they are honestly they're the last line of defense and it's there's that line is falling in our culture now
listen to what she has to say on this especially women listen to what she has to say on this but these messages that
you're you're hearing a lot of them are targeting your young women anti-am messages targeting young women Satan
knows this he will never have a body he will never have a
family and he will Target those young women who create the bodies to
come okay so and that's what's happening right that's where we've gotten to now at this point where where it's it's the
idea the ideologies today are ideologies that are I think
that these have always been around but they finally become so pervasive in a
society that they start getting accepted tolerated and then
advocated um and supported by the women and why is that it's because these
ideologies like identitarianism they lead with an untethered empathy
right women are much more empathetic than men are and they use this and they weaponize it untethered empathy and
malevolent compassion and this is drawing women into it and away from the idea of family
because the identitarian movement or the lgbtq agenda I'm not talking about
individuals who are gay or lesbian or anything else I'm not talking about that I'm talking about the agenda and the
agenda is anti-am the movement is anti-am it is break the law of Chastity
it is throw off the shackles of order and sexual order and and anything that
holds you back from expressing who you really are that agenda is very
anti-family and it is very easy to see that young women and women as a whole
accept this a lot easier than men do because it is an
ideology built on empathy and compassion a weaponized empathy and compassion so I
think she's exactly right and now to the statement I was talking about Kore was
an antichrist Antichrist is anti family say
it again and any Doctrine or principle they hear from the world is that is
anti-am is also Antichrist it's that clear okay anything
that is anti-am is Antichrist and and and she's right right
again you cannot separate these things because the doctrine of Christ is to
give us the full opportunity to be heirs with him that is
exaltation and exaltation is built off of the order of the family it's given to
us right up front in Genesis there's a reason for that for that basic simple
teaching of here's a man here's a woman go multiply and replenish the Earth
anti-am is anti christ and then she's going to go on to say to the Seminary
Institute teachers here that she says that we should have a copy of the family
proclamation in every classroom now I wonder if they started doing that in
2009 it wouldn't surprise me I wonder if we do that today maybe you should check
go to your Seminary classroom and see if there is a an Institute classroom and
see if there is a copy of the family proclamation up on the wall we can't
lose this we we just cannot lose the family theology within the church or we
lose the doctrine of Christ it is President it is president Russell M
Nelson said as Elder Russell M Nelson said in God's Eternal plan salvation is
an individual matter exaltation is a family
matter and that's why it's so important for us to continue to preach and teach and
understand and study the doctrine of exaltation or we're selling ourselves
short on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ I love what she says here I think
that there are again truth bombs everywhere here that we really need to hear thanks for listening
