all right in this Cwic media episode we

are going to talk about

Nephi's take on Lehigh's dream we're

gonna be talking about two things first

the lamb and second the folds here we go

all right we are covering first Nephi

chapters 11 through 15 and I want to

take a whole parts whole approach to

Nephi's vision here to what he sees it's

important to see what's going on here

among these five different chapters to

get a better view of how Nephi is

putting this together and how the

angelic host here for Nephi is laying

out something that's been very laid out

very similarly to many other prophets

but in this case it's very specific to

Nephi first of all as we go into chapter

11 we're going to see the vision of the

Redeemer we're going to see the Lamb of

God that's an important title and we're

going to go over that so that's what

comes out first in 11 about the Tree of

Life what the Tree of Life represents

and overall a doctrine of Christ now as

we move through the chapters we go to

chapter 12 we start pulling away from

just something about the lamb or the

Savior and we start going into the

different folds of the shepherd so to

speak so we talk about the Jews and the

Gentiles we talk about the house of

Israel and specifically for Nephi we

talk about his seed and the seed of his

brethren laman and lemuel and further

down the road we get into how all of

this starts to work together and how

these different folds these different

groups of people these different olive

branches as we hear about

start to work together for the purpose

of meeting the goal of our Heavenly

Father which is to bring to pass the

immortality and eternal life of man and

so then we finish up going back to after

we've touched on the Gentiles

extensively we go back to a

reinterpretation of the dream in chapter

15 and we end up again with the Redeemer

with the savior with the Lamb of God so

there's this overall arching theme that

Nephi is trying to get across here

looks like the angelic host and Nephi

also was trying to get across to him and

it's two things then right it's two

things number one it is the Lamb of God

and the doctrine of Christ right it's

very specifically outlined here two

Nephi and then secondarily it is these

folds these groups of people both of

these things both of them have to do

with covenant right Jesus Christ is the

cannot bet eat right he's the cut to

covenant he is the mediator between God

the Father and us his children and so he

is the Covenant so to speak and then

beyond that everything all these

different groups of people that knee

thigh goes over is all about covenant

it's how it's how not we work with God

necessarily directly but how we work

with each other and how these different

groups help each other out at different

times in history to lift each other up

to preach the gospel and to receive the

gospel and there's timing for this for

all of these different groups and that

all has to do with covenant especially

under the Abrahamic covenant and so

again taking a view that we have Nephi

and Lehi have come out of a time of

apostasy in Jerusalem we get these two

elements

have to do with a higher law the

Abrahamic covenant and the doctrine of

Christ this is all about the Melchizedek

Priesthood and it's Isaiah that is

focused very much so on the Abrahamic

covenant and a messianic message and so

a lot of that we can see in this vision

seems to be pulled both from the book of

Isaiah or at least has the same themes

in it but let's dip down right now into

chapter 11 we're gonna spend more time

on this chapter then the other four

chapters but I want you to look at

starting off right here with verse 4

right the angelic host is here Nephi is

pondering he gets caught up of course

into a mountain that he's never been on

he doesn't know if he's in the body or

not it right it's one of these types of

visions the angelic host acts asks him

what it does he desire and he says he

wants to behold the things that his

father saw so number one he has a desire

number two he believes in the things

that his father saw this was crucial and

the spirit said unto me in verse four

believe us now that thy father saw the

tree of which he hath spoken now let's

get real specific about the reading that

we should look at here or we might look

at here first of all again if we are in

a time of apostasy and if the tree of

life did exist a tree of life a

different menorah did exist inside of

the Holy of Holies and it was removed

then this would have been because of a

change in doctrine right from the

Deuteronomists and if we see here that

the angelic host is specifically asking

do you believe that thy father saw the

tree right then we get a better idea of

okay Nephi has grown up in a time around

him we're around him the doctrine the

the political correct answer to that is

we do not believe in that tree of life

maybe that's a different kind of a tree

in life from the creation story but the

tree of life that is in the temple that

represents Christ and much more will go

into here you would not believe in and

so the angelic host is asking him this

right it's not just oh I believe what my

father said why is the angelic host here

so happy when Nephi says yes I believe

right then angelic host says Hosanna to

the Lord the Most High God

when Nephi says yes think about that

it's because of it this is about

restoration there's a crucial theme

throughout Nephi's vision here it is

restoration of what has been taken away

in Jerusalem we'll show you that and

then the angelic host follows up with

this okay Nephi if you believe in the

Tree of Life that this is what your

father saw then blessed art thou if I

because thou believest in the son of the

Most High God right so in other words oh

if you believe in the Tree of Life then

you believe in the Son of God so this is

what would have been in the temple right

he believes in a higher law he does not

believe in what has been removed from

the temple here and then starting in

verse 7 we're gonna see the first of two

titles that we're gonna get for Jesus

Christ and these are both very important

again let me back up just a second here

let's talk about the titles that Jesus

Christ has when you have a king right

when King Charles the future King

Charles or whatever name he takes

the throne after Queen Elizabeth passes

away he's going to receive several

different titles now for most of us

these are just descriptors rights the

the Duke of whatever right the king

of this the Prince of that for Jesus

Christ we oftentimes see the same thing

oh he's the Prince of Peace he is the

son of God he is the Lamb of God

he is the counselor we need to

understand something about this though

these titles are specific and have a

specific meaning behind them and so they

are used in different ways throughout

the scriptures depending on what the

author is talking about and so here

we're going to see that first of all the

angel says the Nephi you are going to

see a man descending out of heaven and

him shall ye witness after you have

witnessed him you shall bear record that

it is the Son of God I've talked about

this several times what that title means

it means that he is brought into earth

and born of a mother so that's the first

thing we're gonna go over here and

that's important to understand because

immediately after that title is given

here in verse 8 it says and the and that

came to pass that the spirit said unto

me look and I looked and beheld a tree

and it was like under the tree which my

father had seen so again we're getting

the coupling of the Son of God and the

tree here together right and it was like

under the tree which my father had seen

and the beauty thereof was far beyond

yay exceeding of all beauty and the

whiteness thereof did exceed the

whiteness of the driven snow whiteness

means purity and virtue right that's

important to understand throughout the

Book of Mormon and it came to pass after

I had seen the tree I said unto the

Spirit I behold thou has shown unto me

the tree which is precious above all how

does he know how does Nephi know that

this is the tree which is precious above

all now we could say that Lehi told him

and he probably did but why is he

writing it like this why is Nephi

putting it down like this where he's

saying back to the angelic host you have

showed me the tree which is precious

above all he knows about this tree it is

a focus for him he probably knows the

story of how it was removed

the temple that's my take on it right he

knows that this is the tree that is

precious above all and you can just kind

of hear a little rumor a little echo of

him talking about restoration of that

tree of that being restored to the

temple and that's what the vision of

Lehi is here the dream of Lehi it is

very much a vision in a dream of

restoration of what has been lost in

Jerusalem that means the son of God and

the Tree of Life and everything that is

around it just again just like the new

stone I believe was removed the brazen

serpent was removed in the time of

Isaiah right this is a major issue and

so Lehigh's vision here is a vision of

restoration of what it's supposed to be

right just like Moses is on Sinai and he

gets the creation story and the Garden

of Eden story and his vision to make

sure that that is sound doctrine because

it's the core of everything it's the

core of the religion here when you bring

in this tree of life and understand that

that's the doctrine of Christ right and

so Lehigh's vision here and the reason

it's put in here for us know toward the

beginning of the Book of Mormon is to

restore the doctrines that have been

lost so when we talk about the Book of

Mormon having the fullness of the gospel

and many critics out there will begin to

say well you don't even have the

pre-existence or the three degrees of

glory and there's nothing that's added

here at all that's not true this is the

fullness of the gospel it is the

doctrine of Christ that's what this is

all about and so the fullness of the

gospel is being laid out here in this

vision which is a lot like a temple text

that we might have okay so Nephi seems

to know already about this tree is the

way it seems to me and so the angelic

host asks Nephi well what desirous thou

what are you looking for and he says

unto him I want to know the interpret

they're off right again think about him

having this pulled out maybe 10 20 30

years before and all this doctrine and

mayhem coming through theologically in

in Jerusalem and him growing up in this

environment and Lehi fighting against

these changes the whole time he wants a

direct witness from the angel about the

tree of life

that's what's been removed right okay so

he comes back and says that in verse 13

here the angel leaves and this is how he

describes the interpretation of the tree

this is crucial because this is the

doctrine of Christ that had been lost it

says and it came to pass that I looked

and beheld the great city of Jerusalem

why is the angel in response to Nephi

asking about the interpretation of the

Tree of Life

first bringing him back to Jerusalem and

he sees Jerusalem first because that's

where the trees supposed to be and he

also saw other cities and I beheld the

city of Nazareth and in the city of

Nazareth I beheld a virgin and she was

exceedingly fair and white okay now

you've probably heard this in other

podcasts or other places out there about

the description of Mary the Virgin being

equated with the tree of life but I'm

gonna tie this all together for you here

as best that I can

why is the angelic host for Nephi

talking first about Mary in response to

the tree and what does Mary's role have

to do with the Tree of Life I've said

previously in this series that women are

represented oftentimes by trees like an

ashram right the goddess the Canaanite

goddess Asherah was represented by a

tree or groves of trees right and so

here Mary would be equated to the tree

of life for a very good reason and it's

a temple

he says to Nephi that she is exceedingly

fair and white well what else was

exceedingly fair and white it was the

tree right the tree and the fruit is

exceedingly white white is purity okay

and in 14 and it came to pass that I saw

the heavens opened and an angel came

down and stood before me and he said

unto me Nephi what behold us now and he

said a virgin most beautiful and fair

above all other virgins like so the tree

is more beautiful above all above all

other beauty or above all other

whiteness and then he brings this up and

he said unto me knowest thou the

condescension of God so bring in Mary

and then asked if I equate her with a

tree and now ask him about the

condescension of God that question right

there is the core of the meaning of the

Tree of Life it is not just Jesus Christ

but it is the doctrine of Christ that

the tree represents it's the doctrine of

Christ that brings us to the holy of

holies right to the celestial room so he

says knowest thou the condescension of

God the condescension of God is him

lowering himself below all of us into a

mortal state receiving a body being born

of a woman becoming somewhat mortal and

having mortal experiences with that body

and lowering himself so that he can

lift us up sacrificing himself right in

every way possible for us not just his

death but obviously taking on all of the

sins of the world that is him that is

the condescension of God and I said unto

him this is interesting in 17 I know

that he loveth his children all right so

he is equated here the condescension of

God with love so he knows he already is

equating that Jesus Christ

than the condescension of God him

lowering himself has to do with love or

charity that is charity right that is

the pure love of Christ is his

condescension so he says I know that he

loveth his children nevertheless I do

not know the meaning of all things so he

doesn't quite comprehend all of it but

he knows that this has to do with the

love of God so the angel responds to him

using the same title here and he said

unto me behold the Virgin whom thou

seest is the mother of the Son of God

that's the title the title about him

being born into mortality and lowering

himself the condescension of God that's

what the Son of God means after the

manner of the flesh right okay so the

title there is being used exactly the

way it's supposed to be way to go Joseph

Smith all right

great guess great guest Joseph all right

and then coming down here in 20 and I

looked and beheld the virgin again

bearing a child in her arms and now we

get a switch entitled for Jesus Christ

and the angel said unto me behold the

lamb of God yay even the son of the

Eternal Father knowest thou the meaning

of the tree which thy father saw okay so

here we go the tree of life then is

first equated with Mary right because

you can't have a son without Mary you

can't have a son without a mother and

you can say well you can't have a son

without a father either but that's not

the point the point about being born is

that you're born of a woman right that's

where you get your body from and so the

Son of God that term goes along with

birth and being put into

mortality right so excuse exactly the

way it's supposed to be and then you

have so the whole condescension of God

is that and the love and charity of our

Heavenly Father and of Jesus Christ has

brought into that and then we get here

once he's born then the angel

moves on with another title and says

behold the lamb of God yeah even the son

of the Eternal Father there's two more

titles there one is the Lamb of God

interestingly we hardly see this term

anywhere my guess is it was used a lot

more in the Old Testament before but

here's where we see it we see it in the

Gospel of John and John has the Baptist

John the Baptist say behold the lamb of

God I'm going to come back to that in

let you know why John puts it there in

just a second the second place we see it

is in John's book of Revelation he uses

it and remember that John is the one in

the in his gospel that says that he

writes writes this the fourth gospel

well after the other three because he

wants everyone to know that Jesus Christ

is and here's the title the son of God

right that he was that this is Jehovah

born into the world he wants to confirm

this so that there's no mistake about it

so he's all about this doctrine of

Christ in the book of Revelation the

term is used the Lamb of God and it

seems interchangingly with the term the

servant of God now where do we get the

servant the servant is in Isaiah right

we have the servant songs the for

servant songs that are in Isaiah these

are Messianic poems or narratives about

the servant for example the suffering

servant I believe these are everything

to do with ritual and a drama but that's

used interchanging ly and it should be

in Aramaic the language that Jesus would

have spoken and all those around him

would have spoken because they brought

it back later here the wind when Babylon

comes in here in another 10 years and

destroys Jerusalem they take a large

chunk of people out to

Babylon and they're the Babylonians

speak Aramaic and when they come back

they speak Aramaic and they're the

writing and everything changes and so

they end up all the way down to the time

of Jesus they are speaking Aramaic

that's their normal tongue they probably

speak Hebrew in religious circles but

generally the streets language is

Aramaic and in Aramaic you have the word

Thalia and Thalia means both lamb and

servant and so you can see John with

this play on words between the suffering

it's between servant and lamb and it's

important to understand that where this

is used it's used for the connotation of

restoration right the Lamb of God is

there as a restorer of truth and of

everything else of priesthood that's how

when the Lamb of God is used it's also

used as you would think in a Passover

setting as the suffering servant who

would be the one who tones for everybody

else who takes on the sins of the world

so those would go together right that's

what is lost in the Nehor principle

is that the doctrine of Christ of God

coming down becoming mortal receiving a

mortal body and taking on the sins of

the world

that's what's usually lost so when you

are restoring the higher law and the

ordinances it's focused in on that exact

thing on the doctrine of Christ on the

lamb and so naturally the restorer and

the higher ordinances and the

understanding of atonement with Christ

are brought together in this term the

Lamb of God and you'll see if you read

through this vision here through these

five chapters you're going to see over

and over again think of this right think

about this make a

mark in your scriptures so think about

that as the restorer when you read that

and as the one who takes on the sins as

the Paschal Lamb would do but again

Joseph Smith throwing a dart here right

and just happens to hit exactly on the

uses of these titles throughout this

vision here and so then the angel again

after he's gone over this with Nephi

says to him knowest thou the meaning of

the tree which thy father saw so again

we've brought if the Angels gone over

all these things what do they all equal

what is everything here about the tree

and Nephi answers in 22 and says yay it

is the love of God which sheddeth like a

a tree would do shedding its leaves

or shedding its shadow its shade

shedding itself abroad in the hearts of

the children of men softened hearts not

hardened hearts wherefore it is the most

desirable above all things so what do we

get what is the tree of life what is it

really represent bringing all these

things together here we understand that

this is the doctrine of Christ you have

the mother because you have a son right

and you have the condescension of God

him lowering himself below everything

you have the fullness of the gospel in

the restorer and you have the fullness

in the gospel in the son of the Eternal

Father of El Elyon this all is the

doctrine of Christ and that is what was

removed from the temple and the fruit

then as you're partaking of that is what

that tree bears the dot what does the

doctrine of Christ bear for you and then

you consume it right you become

a part of it you follow its example you

have faith in it you accept it you lean

on the doctrine of Christ it is the love

of God and then the angel respond

Romans in 23 and says and he spake unto

me saying yay

and the most joyous to the soul this is

probably a play on words in Hebrew

because joy is also a very similar to a

schwa and which would be tree right and

so it is the most joyous to the soul and

then again go back and think about

second Nephi 2:25 Adam fell that men

might be men are that they might have

joy here right so again that chiastic

idea of the story of Garden V the Garden

of Eden is the fall and then coming back

around and going back up toward the Tree

of Life after the fall is here we have

getting to joy Adam fell that man might

be in men are in a fallen state so that

they might get to the point of having

joy and then in 24 he sees the son of

God using that title they're going forth

among the children of man so he's hey

this is him in his body in his mortal

state going out among the children of

man and many of them fell down at his

feet and then the angel says look and

behold the condescension of God so this

is gonna describe it a little bit more

and if I says I looked and beheld the

Redeemer of the world of whom my father

had spoken this is who he was speaking

of when he was in Jerusalem - and I also

beheld this is very interesting I also

beheld the prophet who should prepare

the way this is coming from Isaiah also

right it's also coming from Isaiah why

do they need to always talk about John

the Baptist it's so interesting to me

that this has brought in over and over

again I think I know why it says and I

also beheld the prophet who should

prepare the way before him and the Lamb

of God right John the Baptist uses that

term in the book of John and the Lamb of

God went forth and was baptized of him

and after he was baptized I beheld the

heavens open and the Holy Ghost come

down

out of heaven and to bite upon him in

the form of a dove this is a central

point and so here's my thought on this

this is why this is put in here number

one I think that there has to be a clear

description of the higher and lower laws

and the angelic host here is telling

Nephi showing Nephi how the Aaronic

priesthood and the Melchizedek

Priesthood are joined here

that's one reason there has to be a

purport of preparatory priesthood for

the fullness of the gospel to come right

that's one reason here the preparer must

be there secondly remember in the

Gospels what we hear is that Jesus says

you know I've come to be baptized of you

John and John the Baptist says how is it

that you want me to baptize you when you

know you should be baptizing me and what

does Jesus say he says well we need to

fulfill all righteousness what does that

mean we need to fulfill all

righteousness and I think what is going

on there it sounds to me is that this is

part he remember he just said behold the

condescension of God well why is he

bringing that up again that's meaning

God lowering himself or he is lowering

himself here to John the Baptist he is

going in underneath so to speak being

baptized just like everybody else has to

be with what with the lower law with the

lower priesthood of John the Baptist and

then and then rising up out of the water

and then also going same through the

same process that we do being baptized

of a lower law of the Aaronic priesthood

and then here's the Holy Ghost in the

form of the dove which is a Melchizedek

Priesthood function right the Holy Ghost

is from the monk isn't it priesthood

just like we receive the gift of the

Holy Ghost with the laying on of hands

from those that hold the Melchizedek

Priesthood so this is a further

description of the Savior lowering

himself below going through the lower

first and just like we do going through

that and then coming up through the

higher law and then Nephi sees him

preaching and healing which is also part

of Isaiah and then that he's taken right

and that the Lamb of God in 32 was taken

by the people yay the son of the

everlasting God was judged of the world

so the son of the everlasting God that

would be the father he's talking about

okay the highest is taken from the world

taken and judged of the world the lowest

and I saw in bear record and then

importantly here in 33 this is something

that we see often times as a theme

throughout the Book of Mormon are the

phrase throughout the Book of Mormon and

throughout the New Testament it says and

I Nephi saw that he was lifted up just

like the brazen serpent upon the cross

and slain for the sins of the world that

would be the Lamb of God and then so

here we have the doctrine of Christ and

then we have everything that fights

against it we have the Nehor

principle including violence right and

so they take Christ they slay him

he resurrects and then the twelve that

are a part of this vision also just like

they were a part of Lehigh's vision

right in Chapter one a first Nephi they

start fighting against the twelfth right

and who fights against the twelve let's

see how this gets kind of a segue here

into the great spacious building in 34

and after he was slain I saw the

multitudes of the earth that they were

gathered together to fight against the

apostles of the Lamb the Lamb for thus

were the twelve called by the angel of

the Lord and the multitude of the earth

was gathered together so what he's

saying here is that the world fights

against the church right fights against

those that are also represent

representatives of Christ this is

important this goes right to I would say

the key point of the entire Book of

Mormon here and the multitude of the

earth was gathered together and I beheld

that they were in a large and spacious

building right so those that go to the

large and spacious building ultimately

it doesn't mean it's kind of like look

you have a core ideology of something

look at the Nazis right from World War

two you have a core ideology of a few

people that are hardcore Nazi right they

are willing to do anything for their

ideology and then you have another level

of people that kind of go along with it

there they agree with it they're pretty

intense about it but they're not the

movers and shakers and then you might

have another level that's a little

further away from that that are maybe

the majority of the people right where

they're kind of going to turn their

backs away they're going to ignore

things they're going to go along with

things but they're not actually going to

create these things right that's how

ideologies work and then beyond that

maybe you have people that want to say

something they want to stop something

but they're too afraid because they know

of the consequences that are gonna come

about so great and spacious building

that's not just because everybody's over

there that doesn't mean that everybody

is a horrible person right it just means

that they're not standing up at the Tree

of Life for the doctrine of Christ

that's what's happening here

so the world is gathered together they

go to the Great and spacious building

like under the building which my father

saw he said and the angel says behold

the world and the wisdom thereof and

behold and well I'm not gonna go there

right now we'll do that later

about the wisdom of the world but behold

the house of Israel have gathered

together to fight against the Twelve

Apostles of the Lamb so he is going to

set this up now throughout these five

chapters about the loss of Christ from

the house of Israel so in other words if

they're over in the Great and spacious

building and they're fighting against

the twelve which is what happened right

with Judah yeah at the time Judea and

those in power the movers and shakers

right in the

that went along with it they fought

against Christ and then they fought

against the Twelve Apostles and tried to

put it out tried to get rid of

Christianity and so they are going to

lose their the Tree of Life

they're going to lose the doctrine of

Christ altogether because remember the

Twelve Apostles are Jews they are of the

house of Israel but their own people are

going to fight against them and so now

it's lost to the house of Israel we're

gonna call this kind of like you know

you have a political football or a

nuclear football this is the religious

football this is the tree of life is the

doctrine of Christ and the Twelve

Apostles have this and the house of

Israel and the rest of the world want to

get rid of it so where is the political

football right now it's with the Twelve

Apostles but what happens to them or the

religious football brother and so then

we get a further description of the

great and spacious building here in the

last verse of this chapter it says and

it came to pass that I saw and bear

record that the great and spacious

building was the pride of the world this

is going to set up the rest of the

vision we have the theophany here of one

descending out of heaven in the heavens

parting and seeing that there's the tree

of life is the doctrine of Christ and

then we have what fights against that in

the knee whore principle and we get the

Great and spacious building right so

it's the pride of the world why is it

the pride of the world

well again in a real sense it is the

lower law it is individualism

that's what pride is right it's a

perversion of individualism it is

selfishness it is my own needs right

it's taking agency a lower law function

it's taking agency and misusing it

for personal need right for personal

gain what is the exact opposite of that

it's what Christ did right he was as

selfless as you can possibly be with his

teachings and of course with his

sacrifice

and so you have the two opposing sides

and whether you are religious or whether

you are a Christian or whether you are a

latter-day saint

it doesn't matter those two truths exist

and the doctrine of Christ even if I

don't know all of the doctrine and don't

have the restored gospel if I am moving

I am moving toward the Tree of Life if I

am giving up things if I am sacrificing

for others that is love ultimately right

that's ultimately what love is

sacrificing for others and the very

greatest example of that and the

farthest extreme that you can possibly

get because it's eternal is the

sacrifice of Jesus Christ and then the

other way is what is in it for me to

some degree or another so any

bit of pulling away from the tree of

life is a move toward pride is a move

towards self is a move toward the great

and spacious building and he says and it

fell and the fall thereof was

exceedingly great again you can think of

Lehi and Nephi thinking about Jerusalem

here they know it's going to be

destroyed right that's how I see it

the shall be the destruction of all

nations Kindred's tongues and people

that shall fight against the Twelve

Apostles of the Lamb so again I think

they're keeping in mind here even though

we may not have the Twelve Apostles or

it could have been something similar to

it who knows we don't know that there

wasn't something like that Prince's

right one for each of the tribes of

Israel that were under a prophet and

perhaps even a presidency some type of a

hierarchical structure of priesthood in

the Old Testament had to exist we know

it did and you can't just have a prophet

or a couple of different prophets that

are just out there without any structure

it doesn't work that way but this to me

is a call to Jerusalem specifically

and a principle in general also and it

sets up the rest of this vision I'll

talk to you next time
