On Authority and the Pragmatics of Religion

“There is a fundamental difference between religion, which is based on authority, [and] science, which is based on observation and reason. Science will win, because it works.” – Stephen Hawking

Just goes to show you that great minds can make great assumptions! To say religion “is based on authority” is a great leap to the other side of the tracks from truth. I suppose some who are religious put their faith primarily in “authority”, as in a closed, literal translation of scripture, or a church leader, but that is not religion. That is someone speaking from the outside looking in. And reason!? There is plenty of good reason in good religion. In fact it is overflowing.
